No fewer than thirteen individuals perish and 98 injured in train derailment in Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” affirmed the head of state.

The president announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose time in office ended the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental goals for the southern region.

Another massive rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The building of both train projects was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant growth of its duties in national projects. They were completed at an rapid speed, defying predictions to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled ongoing questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an prior accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an urgent pause in the development and management of all such projects.

This halt was proposed until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "requires prompt explanations."

In reply, the head of state insisted that the train had been operating in total adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and management of these national initiatives.
